Independent Technology, Cybersecurity & AI Advisory · South West WA

The senior technology voice your business doesn’t have in-house

Most South West businesses have an IT provider keeping the lights on, but no one senior enough to weigh in on strategy, cyber risk or AI without a sales agenda. We sit alongside your IT provider and vendors as that independent voice, representing your business, not theirs. No jargon, no upsell, just straight advice.

Who’s behind SouthWestAI

One person, two decades of hands-on technology leadership

SouthWestAI is James Walker. No account managers, no junior staff answering on his behalf. Before founding SouthWestAI, he spent 20+ years in ICT, infrastructure and operational technology, including as the sole IT leader for a remote overseas mine site, where the systems he ran underpinned physical operations, not just office admin. He also holds the CISSP certification, one of the most recognised credentials in cybersecurity and uncommon among independent technology and AI advisors. That’s the standard he brings to every engagement: understand how the business actually runs, then make a call.

What we do

Three ways we support your technology decisions

We’re not your IT provider, and we’re not a web agency. We sit between you, your IT provider and your vendors, helping you decide what technology to use, why it’s needed, and whether it’s actually delivering value.

Technology Advisory & Fractional IT Leadership

Senior technology leadership for businesses that don't have it in-house.

  • Technology strategy & roadmaps
  • Fractional CTO, CIO & IT leadership
  • IT provider & vendor oversight
  • CRM, ERP & software selection
  • Budgeting, cloud & data-location advice
  • Board & management reporting

Cybersecurity & Resilience

Independent assessment and governance. We don't resell security products.

  • Essential Eight-aligned assessments & roadmaps
  • Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace security reviews
  • Identity, access & MFA reviews
  • Backup & recovery assurance
  • Cyber risk registers & incident-response planning
  • Executive cyber briefings

AI, Automation & Business Improvement

We start with the business problem, not a predetermined tool. We'll recommend an existing product long before we'd ever suggest building something custom.

  • Process mapping & AI opportunity assessments
  • Admin & customer-follow-up workflow automation
  • Quote & document automation, CRM integration
  • Safe AI adoption, governance & training
  • Custom solutions where off-the-shelf SaaS doesn't fit

Who we help

Does this sound familiar?

If any of this sounds like your business, that’s exactly the kind of thing we help sort out.

Technology Advisory & Fractional IT Leadership

“We're not sure whether our IT provider is giving us the right advice.”

We're independent of your IT provider and any vendor. We review what you're paying for, whether it's actually serving the business, and tell you straight if something needs to change.

Technology Advisory & Fractional IT Leadership

“We need a CRM but don't know which one to select.”

We help you evaluate vendors and tender responses on what actually matters: fit, support and total cost, not just the feature list, so you choose with confidence.

AI, Automation & Business Improvement

“I'm sick of doing the manual parts of my business. Surely AI can help automate this?”

Often, yes. We'll tell you honestly if an existing product already solves it, rather than building something custom you don't need. A bespoke solution only gets recommended when nothing off-the-shelf actually fits.

Cybersecurity & Resilience

“We want to use AI but are concerned about privacy and security.”

We help you adopt AI safely, weighing the privacy and security risk alongside the opportunity, so you're not choosing between innovation and protection.

Cybersecurity & Resilience

“I don't know if we're protected against a cyber attack, or how we'd respond if our data was compromised.”

We assess your business against recognised frameworks like Essential Eight, show you exactly where the gaps are, and make sure your team knows what to do if the worst happens.

AI, Automation & Business Improvement

“Administration is consuming too much time, and we're missing enquiries or failing to follow up quotes.”

We map where the time is actually going and show you which automation or AI genuinely fixes it, not just what's trending.

Worth knowing: we’re not the right call for printer problems, laptop repairs, password resets, or routine help-desk support. That’s what your IT provider is for. We’re the call when the question is bigger than that.

Why SouthWestAI

What makes this different

There’s no shortage of IT providers and consultants in the region. Here’s specifically what’s different about working with SouthWestAI.

Based here, not visiting

We're not a capital-city firm parachuting in for a project. We're in the South West, we show up in person, and we're here for the long term.

Proportionate, not gold-plated

We recommend spending where the operational benefit or risk reduction genuinely justifies it. Never technology for its own sake.

No contract to sell you into

No IT provider retainer and no software licences riding on the advice. We represent your business in the room, not a vendor's.

Plain-English, no jargon

We explain the trade-offs in language that makes sense, so you stay in control of the decision, not just the person who signs off on it.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do you work with businesses in Busselton, Bunbury and the wider South West?

Yes. SouthWestAI is based in the South West and works with organisations across Busselton, Dunsborough, Bunbury, Margaret River and Vasse, in person where it helps and remotely where it doesn't.

Do you offer fractional IT leadership or a fractional CTO arrangement?

Yes. People often call it a fractional CTO or fractional IT manager. It's an ongoing, independent senior technology voice for South West businesses that need direction on strategy, vendors and risk but aren't ready for a full-time hire.

Do you compete with our IT provider?

No. We're not a replacement for your IT provider, and we don't do help-desk work. We sit alongside your IT provider and vendors as an independent voice, making sure the technology decisions being made are actually right for your business.

How much does it cost to get started?

Every engagement starts with a free discovery call. If it's a fit, the next step is a paid Business Technology Review or AI & Automation Opportunity Assessment. You'll get a clear, fixed price for that before you commit to anything.

Is AI worth the investment for our business?

It depends on where the time, cost and risk actually sit, which is exactly what an AI & Automation Opportunity Assessment examines. We recommend automation when the expected operational benefit justifies the cost and change involved.

Do you work in person or remotely?

Both. We're based in the South West and happy to meet face-to-face, but we also work remotely with organisations across the region.

How long does an engagement take?

A Business Technology Review or AI & Automation Opportunity Assessment is usually wrapped up within a couple of weeks, with a report and roadmap to follow. From there, implementation projects or ongoing advisory involvement are scoped to fit your business.

Do you provide ongoing support?

We're not a help desk. Printer problems, laptop repairs and password resets are what your IT provider is for. What we offer is ongoing Technology Advisor or Fractional IT Leadership involvement: an independent voice keeping your roadmap, vendors and risk on track.

Is our data safe?

Security and privacy are built into how we assess and design solutions. We consider the information involved, access requirements, data location, vendor terms and appropriate controls, then explain material risks and responsibilities before implementation. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.
